Most of us LOVE to lose weight. It’s a good thing. There aren’t very many of us who see it as a bad thing. And those who see it as a bad thing have very specific reasons for having that perspective. Weight loss for the large majority of people is a result of very, very hard work. And when you have to work very hard for something and you are able to achieve it it’s the most wonderful thing in the world. But there’s something even more wonderful: fast weight loss.

Fast weight loss is bad. That’s what most people believe. They believe that fast weight loss is nothing more than water weight. They believe that fast weight loss is just depressing because as soon as they’ve lost it and stopped dieting it will come right back. But recent research indicates that fast weight loss is not bad. But you wouldn’t know it from talking to most people; the public is stubborn when it comes to admitting they’re wrong.

When new information is offered to the public it would be nice if they immediately saw the error of their ways and changed their opinion on the matter. But that’s just never the case. The public is a little slow to catch on when new information proves wrong a theory they’ve been embracing for years.

The negative nature of “fast weight loss” was founded on the claim that any fast weight loss would be gained back as soon as the diet is completed. Some imply that fast weight loss is nothing more than water weight lost. Some insist that any time they lose weight fast they gain it right back as soon as they stop dieting.

Sometimes these negative views on fast weight loss do occur. But apparently they are in no way an active definition of fast weight loss. How do we know this? New research published through the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine indicates fast weight loss is actually a positive way to start off a diet or dieting program.

Why is it a positive indicator? There’s more than one reason. Apparently women that lose weight fast end up losing more total weight in the end. They are also more likely to diet for longer consecutively. And that same group (women who lose weight fast) are more likely to maintain their total weight loss long term.

And there are more positives to consider. Fast weight loss seems to result in more effective and thorough weight loss journaling. They keep track of what they eat more thoroughly than other dieters. And they are more consistent in keeping track of their actual weight on a day to day basis. This makes them more aware of their eating habits leading to a healthier eating lifestyle.

Weight loss journaling is a major plus for two reasons: it makes dieting more effective and it makes successful dieters more aware of their eating preferences that lead to both weight gain and weight loss. Some individuals find that when they eat at a certain restaurant or location they tend to make unhealthy eating choices. Others find that whenever they find themselves in a certain social situation they tend to make unhealthy eating choices. And knowing what the problems are makes it easy to avoid future issues that could lead to weight gain.
