Green smoothie recipes might just as well be called modern art, because it works the same – throw in a lot of stuff and hope that what comes out is a masterpiece. Artists throw paint and oils at a canvas, while smoothies are made by dumping fruits and greens in a blender. Bear in mind though, that drinking smoothies is considered healthy while trying to lick the paint off a modern art masterpiece will end up causing indigestion.

Ordinary smoothies are blended beverages that contain frozen fruits. Popular recipes use bananas, blueberries, pears, apples, pineapples and mangoes. Some water, crushed ice and sweeteners like syrup and/or honey are added to the mix.

The result is a blend thicker than soft drinks, not unlike a milk-shake. While green smoothie recipe experiments succeed with just about all vegetables, the ones mostly used are of the leafy kind. Common examples include lettuce or spinach, parsley and kale.

The usual way is to make it 60-40 in favor of the fruits to get the right combination of healthy diet and taste. First thing to do would be wash all the veggies and fruits, and then cut them up so they can blend well. Put the ones which have more water-content into the blender first.

Drown the contents with enough water to submerge everything. Otherwise, it won’t mix into a smooth blend. Run the blender until everything combines into a single blended mix instead of different tasting clumps. But make sure not to blend beyond this stage, otherwise it will end up as warm and watery liquid.

Right, so it’s that hard to make. But does this green smoothie recipe live up to all the hype? Well, it provides nutrients without fat and a high-energy drink kick without packing in the calories. Secondly, there is no food waste so it is also an eco-friendly drink. Is there any other beverage that is just as tasty, healthy and eco-friendly?
