What Makes A Vegetarian Diet Healthy? Is a vegetarian diet healthy for you, or nutritionally insufficient? Some people claim that a poorly planned vegetarian diet cannot be healthy. But the opposite is also true: a well-planned vegetarian or vegan diet can be very healthy and provide nutritional benefit. There are three main advantages to following a vegetarian diet, which are explained in this article.

Vegetarian diets can help protect your heart. Many vegetarians eat nuts as a form of protein, and these nuts contain healthy fats called “omega” fats. Omega-3 and omega-6 both help the body reduce cholesterol, and work to unclog arteries. Because the vegetarian diet tends to be rich in these oils, vegetarians may experience better cardiac health.

That’s not the only heart-healthy staple in the typical vegetarian diet. Many vegetarians and vegans drink soy milk rather than regular milk. Soy milk also helps protect the heart, because it also reduces cholesterol.

Vegetarians also tend to have better skin than do nonvegetarians. The vegetarian diet, with its focus on fruits and vegetables, is rich in many vitamins including A and E. Both A and E vitamins contribute to healthy skin.

Vegetarians also get more fiber, via fruits and vegetables. Fiber helps the body rid toxins, which in turn contributes to healthier skin.

Finally, vegetarians benefit from the increased consumption of antioxidants possible with a vegetarian diet.

Antioxidants are powerful compounds that protect us from cancer. Antioxidant-rich foods help the body destroy free radicals. Free radicals are compounds which are believed to cause or contribute to cancer. Many vegetarian meals are rich in two of the strongest antioxidants, vitamins C and E. This is because vitamins C and E are readily available in many fruits and vegetables.

So, what concerns might a prospective vegetarian still have?

Assertions that vegetarians are unhealthy and their diet nutritionally incomplete are untrue. More importantly, vegetarians enjoy several important health benefits as a consequence of their food choices.
