On July 11, 2003, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ruled that all food labels declare the amount of trans fat acid contents. This rule came into force from 1st January of 2006.

After implementation of this rule, many people have realized the effects of trans fat on their health. Trans fatty is a type of fat that is formed when liquid oils are turned into solid fats. This is done through a process called hydrogenation which helps in increasing shelf life of food products. Some foods which contain trans fat are – candies, cookies, margarines, fried foods, snack items, baked foods as well as many other processed foods.

The problem with trans fat is that it can raise LDL cholesterol in the blood. LDL cholesterol is also sometimes called ‘bad’ cholesterol as it can increase the risk of developing coronary heart diseases. Furthermore, trans fat may decrease levels of HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol in the blood.

Best Way to Lose Weight and Reduce Risk of Heart Disease

You need to decrease LDL cholesterol levels in the body in order to reduce risk of coronary heart diseases. To do this, you should try to restrict the amount of fat and trans fat in your daily diet.

There is research which indicates that consuming trans fat may lead to weight gain as well as increase in abdominal fat. If you are planning to lose weight and stay fit, then you should not only try to consume less number of calories than you are currently doing, but at the same time, you should restrict the consumption of trans fat in your diet.

The American Heart Association suggests that people eat less than 2-3 grams of trans fat per day. However, the recommended dosage may vary slightly depending on the number of calories you are consuming. To reduce trans fat intake, you need to restrict junk and processed food which you normally eat.

What more steps can you take to reduce trans fat intake? First of all, carefully read the labels on the food items you purchase from grocery. Secondly, reduce the frequency of eating out in restaurants. Home cooked meals can be the best option if you want to lose weight and stay healthy. And let me remind you again – give up on junk food or at least reduce their consumption considerably.
