In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make her “French Fries” that are baked, not fried! This is a great way to have an All-American snack, without all the fat and calories. They are spicy, too! Ingredients: 2 medium to large Idaho baking potatoes 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (I used peanut oil.) 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce (more, if you like them really spicy!) 1 envelope seasoned coating mix for pork (Shake ‘n Bake) 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese cooking oil spray Peel the 2 potaoes, and cut them into lengthwise strips, about 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch wide, making all strips as equally-sized as possible. Store them in a large bowl, covering them with cold water, until ready to use. Combine 1/2 cup water, 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, and 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce in a small dish. Combine 1 envelope of coating mix and 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese in a gallon-size plastic zip-lock bag. Dip about 6 to 8 potato strips in the water and oil mixture, shaking off excess water. Then, drop the potato strips into the coating mixture. Shake until coated, and place in a single layer on a baking sheet or shallow baking pan that has been sprayed with cooking oil. (I cover my baking pan with aluminum foil and use it as if it were the surface of the pan, for easy clean-up.) Continue with the remaining potato strips, until all are coated and placed evenly in a layer in the baking pan. However, one should remember that even those risk factors can also contribute to the occurrence of back pain. Risk factors include aging, size and shape of the spine, smoking, long driving, stress, and exhausting physical labor in work.

Low back pain is truly common, when you have one, rest assured you are not alone. Almost everyone has it because it is the most common back disorder experienced at school, work and even at home.

As common as it is, back pain accounts also for more disability especially when left untreated and disregarded. Remember, any pain in the back, whether mild or severe can actually prevent you from working at home and even on the workplace productively.

It is very important that you know what main factors can trigger the back pain to prevent further occurrence and to prevent less unproductive mode:

Causes of low back pain are categorized as mechanical, physical, neurological, bio mechanical and psychological.

  • Mechanical Causes: This one cause is something to do with the abnormal functioning and positioning of the spine.

Muscle straining.This can happen when the muscles are stretched, forced, and worked out to its fullest extent.This usually happens when your body is still unadjusted yet you engaged to rigid exercises without enough stretching Also, it is more likely to people with labor works and people engaging into work that requires standing and sitting for long periods.

Osteoarthritis. This condition is very common among elderly. This is so because when one ages, the bones and joints that support the back are also degenerating, thus leading to loss of function. With osteoarthritis, bones will become even stiffer and tender allowing pain to occur on the lower part of the back.  As such, when the lower back is affected, there can be difficulty in walking allowing the person with this situation to slouch.

Spinal tightening. This is a condition wherein the canal of the spine is being compressed by the nerves.

  • Physical Causes.This is entirely affecting the whole body.

Cancer:   This is very common on the advanced stage of cancer because the tumor or malignant cells can spread. As the cells spread, they can invade the spine’s normal tissues and cells.

Infections:  infection can be a cause because of the bacterial invasion directly into the spine during an operation. As this can penetrate into the spine, lower back pain is also felt. High anti bacterial drugs are usually the recommended treatment for this situation to prevent inflammation and pain.

Neurological Disorders. Back Pain pinched nerve is the most common neurological disorder.The nerves are usually the messenger of information from the brain going to the different parts of the body to cause movement. When there is pinching of the nerves , lower back pain may get affected and the pain can be felt as radiating lower to the legs. 

  • Biomechanical Causes. One of the most common causes of low back pain is the bio mechanical. Bio mechanical cause is directly attributed to poor posture as the backs, buttocks, abdomen and head are not positioned properly when sitting, standing or sleeping.  These poor postures can lead to chronic back pain causing wear and tear of the spine.
  • Psychological Causes.  As for the research, back pain specifically on the lower back is associated with psychological causes. These are commonly called as “stress related back pain”.Although these are new and not common, you must know that when one is stressed emotionally, back pain can be the direct result.  Examples are seen below.

    *  Depression

     * Anxiety

     * Anger

     * Stress

     * Lack of effective coping skills

     * Person’s belief to control pain

Before many Australians recently, a devastating story unfolded on a popular current affairs program. We watched with compassion as the fattest man in Australia told of his most recent, serious attempt to lose weight. Approximately 12 months earlier and weighing close to 300 kilos, he under went life threatening surgery to lose weight.

To answer this we need to understand how much energy a body requires. For each pound you weigh, each day you need 12 calories to maintain your body weight. If you weigh 120 pounds you will need 120 x 12 calories, that is, 1440 calories per day to maintain that body weight. If you eat or drink more calories than your body requires, the excess energy is stored as fat. It takes 3,600 excess calories to make one pound of fat.

In this example, if your typical daily calorific intake is 2000 calories, in around 30 days you would put on between 4-5 pounds of fat!
Let’s say, you then decide to go on a restrictive diet and halve your calorific consumption to 1,000 calories per day. You stay on this diet for around a month and lose 10 pounds and now weigh 110 pounds. You feel fantastic about losing the weight but can’t keep up such a restrictive regime because you are irritable and have no energy.

So you go off your diet and go back to your usual routine of 2,000 calories a day. Remember you are lighter now and your body requires less energy to maintain its new weight. You would now require 110 x 12, that is, 1320 calories per day.
In this instance, by consuming 2000 calories daily, because you are lighter than before, you would put the weight back on in just 24-25 days!

If you want to keep the weight off you must develop a consistent change in eating habits to ensure you do not consume more than your body requires. You cannot continue to eat the same quantities and/or combinations of foods that caused you to be overweight in the first place. This will require developing an understanding of the nutritional content of food and raising your body’s metabolism through increased muscle mass and exercise.
