It is a seemingly small problem but snoring can cause big problems in a relationship when one partner is kept awake by the one who snores. Thankfully, there are several snoring cures that work to resolve the problem. It is necessary to first identify what makes you snore. Ask your partner to take note of when you tend to snore and when you do not.

Establish how you snore as well. With closed mouth snorers, the problem may be with the tongue while for closed mouth snorers, the throat may be where the problem lies. Change sleeping positions too. Sleep on an extra pillow to bring the tongue and jaw forward or use pillows made especially to reduce snoring. Sleep on your side as sleeping on the back as gravity drops the tongue and tissues which can block the passage ways. Avoid heavy meals right before bed too.

There is also what is called the tennis ball trick where a ball is put on the back and is held in place by a pajama top. When it is slept on when sleeping on the back, it is pressed on which makes one sleep sideways. Use it until you get used to it. Doctors or ENT specialists can also show you exercises for the throat that can tone the upper tract which eases it.

Should any of the solutions above fail, seek medical attention. You can be given oral and dental gadgets that push the tongue and lower jaw forward when you sleep. There is also a gadget that generates continuous positive airway pressure. It wafts pressurized air to a face mask which ensures airways stay open during sleep.

As a last resort, an operation can be done to widen the airways by surgically removing tissues. Alternatively, the soft palate can have implants placed on it. The palate hardens as scar tissue grows over it which stills the vibrations associated with snoring. More recently, lasers are being utilized to trim off parts of the soft palate which does alleviate snoring.
